CHARACTER INFO

Character: Verso
Canon: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, beginning of Act 3, before he meets up with Maelle
Age: More than 100 years old, physically 26

Background Information:
Verso's biography from the wiki

Personality:
Trigger warning for suicidal ideation.

1&2) Tell us about who your character is and what someone’s first impression would be upon meeting them. What is a driving force your character has? What goals do they have, what motivates them, etc?

Combining these two as it will flow better.

When it comes to first impressions, Verso could be described as mysterious, charming, and in a word: debonair. A lot of this is attributed to how he carries himself, using whatever mask is necessary to be able to gain the trust of whoever he's interfacing with. He does not talk about himself often, instead choosing to deflect and keep things like, flipping the question to whoever he's talking to instead of keeping the spotlight on himself. On the rare occasion that he opens up, it's after much poking and prodding. It's at that point that he tells them just enough to placate them without revealing more than he needs to, thus being able to keep up that air of mystery to him.

It's also because of this that others might deem him untrustworthy or that there is something that his is withholding. Lune and Sciel were both able to clock this after he joined forces with them, only agreeing to have him stick around because their goals aligned: "The enemy of my enemy is my friend", to a degree. They don't confront him until they find the journal of Expedition 58 in Old Lumière, which reveals that he is the son of Renoir, the man who massacred their own Expedition upon landing on the Continent. This is when he tells them the truth about his relationship with Renoir, but only what they need to know, leaving out crucial details about Alicia and the Paintress.

It's because of this that he can be seen as selfish and manipulative. Joining Expedition 33 was a means to an end. While their goal was to take down the Paintress to end the Gommage, an event that causes those of the age painted on the Monolith to die, Verso doesn't reveal that doing so will kill everyone who remain in the process. Verso is fully aware that the Paintress is actually protecting the inhabitants of Lumière, sending a warning through her painted numbers as her power wanes and that the Gommage is actually caused by the Curator, Renoir himself, who is trapped beneath the Monolith.

His own reasoning to get rid of the Paintress, however, is different from that of the Expeditioners. Verso wants to die. It's bleak to say the least, but he has lived for over a hundred years, and he is just so very tired. He has questioned his own immortality, his own existence, and the remaining time left of this world as the Monolith ticked down year after year, and believes that when the barrier separating the Paintress and the rest of the world is torn down, he will be able to find rest. He also does this to finally stop the fighting between his parents, the Paintress (Aline) and the Curator (Renoir), that has transpired for over 67 Monolith years, preceding the real Verso's death. This, however, doesn't occur and the population of Lumière is wiped out in a mass Gommage, leaving him alone, and still alive within the Canvas, as per his canon point.

It's worth noting that it's not because Verso doesn't care for others. He does to a point, especially when it comes to his family. He is shown to be particularly close to Alicia, still wanting to protect her despite his choice to separate from the family after the events of Expedition 0 and the search and rescue missions that followed. This also carries over to Maelle, immediately clocking that she is a repainted version of his sister, and protecting her as early as the attack on Expedition 33 on the beach, where he finds and carries her out of the battle, tucking her away into the Manor for her own safety. He even warns the Expedition of the dangers of going up against Axons and tells them he would like them to get out of this alive when they go up against Renoir in Old Lumiere. There is a willingness to protect them from harm as well, not wanting their lives and endeavors to be for naught.

He's even shown to have loved someone in the past, Julie, another Expeditioner. However, the relationship turned sour after she learns of his immortality. After suffering a blow that should've been fatal for Verso, he is able to heal from his wounds, making Julie suspicious. He is then captured and tortured by Julie and her team, who believe that he and Renoir may have betrayed Expedition 0 in some way. This leads Verso to kill Julie and her team so he could protect his family, as they come first before anything else. He does feel remorse for this, seen when Alicia comforts him after the massacre and choosing to bury them and other Expeditioners in the Forgotten Battlefield.

Because of his charm, he can be friendly with others. He is able to connect with Maelle, Sciel, and Lune easily, finding things that he can talk about and reveal parts of himself that he is willing to share, such as the need to dye his hair black (he's actually quite vain about it) or being passionate about music, being able to play the piano. He's even had lifelong friendships with both Monoco and Esquie who have known him for what seems like forever.

In the end, Verso is a complicated character with a lot of conflicting feelings about himself, stemming from the fact that he is simply a recreation of the real Verso who died in the past. Does he even have a right to live after real Verso's life was taken away so easily in the fire? Or does he truly deserve death so that he and the grief of the Dessendre family can be put to rest?

3) What are their flaws as a character? What is something they've messed up, or have done that they regret?

As established in the prior two questions, Verso is a lying liar who lies. He will conceal the truth, speaking in false dichotomies and making decisions for others if he gets what he wants. If it is for the betterment of himself and his family, he isn't above playing dirty or making decisions that others might frown upon.

Besides the incident with Julie and the mass Gommage, there is some regret in lying to Maelle. When Renoir cuts down Gustave in the Stone Wave Cliffs, Verso intervenes before Maelle could be harmed. In reality he could've stepped in and saved Gustave as well, having shadowed the Expedition closely from the very beginning. Instead, he chose not to, not wanting to risk Maelle choosing Gustave's side instead of Verso's if things came down to it.

While he does not regret not saving Gustave, it pains him to lie to Maelle, as she is a repainted version of his sister Alicia, who he has shown a fondness to in both the real and painted worlds.

4) Optional: What is something unique and interesting about them, or what is a fun little tidbit that sets them apart from the crowd?

Despite the somewhat gruff exterior, Verso has never really lost his child-like wonder. He is the creator of the gestrals, Monoco, and Esquie, and has likes trains since he was a child. Verso's view of the world is whimsical despite his actions, able to be unserious on some occasions. After all, he let Monoco slice him in half just so he could cheer up the rest of the Expeditioners.

Abilities & Inventory:
- Verso is adept at dual-wielding a sword and knife in battle, as well as have some ability to manipulate chroma (mana of the game's world). With chroma, he is able to summon and dismiss both his weapons at will. He is also able to do this with larger objects, even as large as a piano as seen during one of the camp scenes in game.

This, in part, is because of the real Verso's ability as a Painter, someone who is able to create whole worlds within Canvases. They are able to shape the landscape and even the inhabitants of the Canvas through manipulation of chroma. Unlike real Verso, painted Verso (this version I am bringing into the game) is unable to Paint to the same ability. Considering this could be abused, he will be constrained to only summoning his weapons and a few smaller objects. Any attempts to summon larger objects will be met with failure or will take a lot out of him.

- As one of the Paintress' greatest creations and as a part of her family, Verso is cursed with the inability to die, effectively making immortal. Though not explained in great detail, he has made many attempts to die, each time having proved unsuccessful, as his wounds are able to heal at a rapid rate. He can even be chopped in half and still somehow able to be put back together, even doing this for "fun" or as a means to be "light-hearted", such as manipulating severed body parts. He does feel the pain of any wounds inflicted on him, in spite of this.

In Escordvi, I'd like to explore the possibility that his healing does not work as well as he might expect. As he is a painted version of the real Verso, he shouldn't even be able to exist outside of the Canvas. Being in another world makes his existence muddy and curious, and may be an interesting concept for him to deal with.

The items he will be bringing along with him are a sword and knife, Maelle's Expedition 33 armband, and the clothes on his back.

ARMADA SELECTION

Corsair. Verso looks out for himself first and his family second. He is selfish and manipulative to the point that he is willing to use people as pawns to be able to enact his plans, going as far as risking their lives to achieve his goals. While he does stand up for others when certain situations call for it, he can just as easily flip the switch and turn on them without a second thought.

Questions: Spoke to Lae about this in passing, but just wanted to make sure that the approach to his healing ability is okay. If not, I can go with him still having healing but to a lesser capacity instead.
